A Labyrinth Experience for the Lucky.

On a misty April morning, pilgrims from Columbia gathered on the grounds of the Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, where we joined with the ancients in the practice of walking the labyrinth.  Becky Waldrop, Director of Development at SBC, prepared us for our experience with a historical overview of labyrinths, emphasizing their particular importance to women throughout the ages.  While certainly an individual activity, the walk shared only heightened the experience of the 7 circuit medieval labyrinth.  And like perfect timing is, as the rain began, we retreated into the warmth of the dining room to share a lovingly prepared meal.  Thanks go to Melinda Britt for leading us and hosting us.  As we departed the International Peace Garden in the shadow of the bustling city, the air moved just a little easier through the lungs of women who had taken a moment to reconnect with themselves.

Shady Character Love Flowers. And Holly.

In the lovely home of Mary Hunter, the Shady Characters gathered together, where Holly Poling shared a sampling of her botanical print collection.  An avid procurer of botanicals for nearly 20 years, Holly's knowledge is as extensive as her collection, with some pieces over 200 years old.  Holly assured us that, while we may chase the elusive tulip, antique botanicals are still available to brighten our homes and remind us of days when the study of plant life was an education and an art.  Betsy Scott presented a wonderful buffet of casseroles, ending our meal with beautiful Valentine cookies, ensuring us that the love she shared with us through our Deep Root readings filled both hearts and tummies.  

Shady Queens Enjoy Bee-utiful Day

Gathering at Karen's hive, the Shady Characters' letter of the day was "B".  Jim Garrison, of The Beekeepers of Middle Tennessee, revealed facts, lore, and methods of beekeeping.  We were treated to a sampling of the fruit of his (and his buzzing friends') labor, carried onto the palate with the one true vehicle - biscuits.  Following the sweet appetizer, Kristi presented us with a scrumptious luncheon, complete with bee petit fours fit for a queen.

Shady Character Serve Up the Vittles

After plucking on Thursday and cooking on Friday, the Shady Characters gathered with the 'regulars' at The People's Table to dish up piping hot chicken pot pie (Peggy's recipe!) and beautiful fried apples, with a crispy salad and toasty bread on the side.  The first snow of the winter didn't keep the crowd away and, with school out, we had the pleasure of some young 'uns.  Thank you Nick, Bennett, Kyle, Gracie, Mimi, Tucker and Kurt for the extra hands.  As we gathered, Eddie Baker read a portion of the Christmas story before blessing the meal, bringing the focus on the Reason for the Season.  Then happy smiles were exchanged as tummies were filled and hearts warmed.  

Shady, Lazy Day on the Duck

The Shady Characters flotilla of canoes and kayaks departed the Riverside boat ramp and headed out for the 'bridge and tire' tour of the Duck River on a picture-perfect day.  Betsy's careful paddling guaranteed safe delivery of her seasonal centerpiece and Melinda Houston's wonderful brown bag lunch was enjoyed after we beached our vessels at nature's rest stop. Once again, the gals from Higher Pursuits led us safely downstream while at the same time sharing tidbits of history and lore of the River.  Karen Vest's expertise in aviary helped spot local birds like the Kingfisher and Blue Heron (no eagle sighting today). Be ready when Gale gives a pop quiz on the length of the Duck - 269 miles, bill to tail.  

PS. No, the SCGC hasn't expanded to include men - we interrupted Gilly Orr and friend's fishing.  We exchanged 'hey's while smoking them in our wakes.
