The Shady Characters Get Cheeky

On Tuesday, April 8th, a group of Shady Characters met at Cheekwood Botanical Garden in Nashville, Tennessee to stroll among the spring blossoms.  Our tour guide led us through the variety of gardens, where we gleaned ideas to take home with us, breathed in the colors and scents of spring and some enjoyed their first taste of RedBull.  We had the opportunity to tour the mansion, enjoying the current exhibit, Painters of American Life:  The Eight and were treated to lunch together in the Pineapple Room by our hostesses, Betsy Scott and Mary Hunter. Betsy read us an excerpt from the book, "Thisbe's Promise", a book written by her sister-in-law, Laurian Scott in memory of her daughter, leaving nary a dry eye in the place.

SCGC Help Class up the Memorial Building.

As has been the tradition for several years, the Shady Characters convened in the kitchen/greenhouse of the Memorial Building to assemble the centerpieces for the annual Maury County Benefit Ball.  Tom Harmon conducted a 'how-to' session, and then we went to work.  The black and white theme was beautifully accented by the elevated arrangements, complete with hidden illumination.  This year's Ball was particularly special, as our own Gale Moore was surprised with the award named in her mother's honor, the Lucille Queener Courtney Community Service Award.  While we know Gale best when she is sporting her beloved running shoes, she puts on the pumps with the best of them.  We are so proud of you Gale, and thank you for all you give back to our community.

Shady Characters Share the Love

Shady Love was in the air at Kim's house where we gathered 'round the kitchen island to make lovely bouquets we shared with special friends. Karen treated us to a sweetheart of a lunch and Melinda blew us kisses with her Two-Lips Bouquet.

Have Yourself a Shady Little Christmas

The Shady Characters gathered for our December meeting at Emily McKnight's and celebrated the holiday by the wearing of silly antler/candy cane headbands and playing our version of dirty Christmas with a gift exchange.  We had mimosas and brunch, taking time out of a very busy week to enjoy each other, our time together and the Joy of the season.

Stormy skies and patchy precipitation (good friends of planting, actually) didn't keep the Shady Characters from once again reporting for duty.   Members gathered around the Peace Fountain in downtown Columbia with trowels in hand.   Friend of SCGC, Tom Harmon, suggested plant choices and locations and within the hour 160 bulbs had been tucked in for their long winter's nap.   Patience is now the only requirement for the beauty the Courthouse and downtown visitors will enjoy with spring's arrival.   Thanks to the organizers of this pay-it-forward event - now, to lunch!

Floating Into Fall

October 16, 2007
To quote SCGC member Dawn Moore quoting Baby Bear, the day was "JUST RIGHT". Not too hot, not too cold; a calm and beautiful day on the Duck. Launching from the county jail ramp, the Characters ended their float at Chickasaw Trace Park, where they enjoyed the lunch prepared for them by Edward and Ruth Moore and served by Dawn. She also provided the Deep Root, which was the lyrics to "Happy Ever After Is In Your Eyes" by Ben Harper.
